Chugging Along: Seniors’ Toy Train Trip through Nostalgia

Senior enjoying toy train in Season two - Best retirement community in India

Season Two residents enjoy toy train adventure across Veli Tourist Village.

Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education, in the elder, a part of the experience. As we age it might seem like our physical limitations and personal commitments might be a barrier, but the only thing between us and our next destination is having the will. For elders in particular travelling or even a small outing can provide a sense of adventure and a chance to try new things, which can be especially important for those who may have become isolated or have limited opportunities for new experiences. We at Season Two always encourage our residents to search for new experiences and we love to assist them in realising them.

As part of our monthly outdoor experience, the residents at our Pattom and Pettah Communities decided to spend their evening at Veli Tourist Village. The Veli Tourist Village which lies where the Veli Lake meets the Arabian Sea provides for unique boating and picnicking opportunities. Visitors can hire pedal boats or paddle boats as per their convenience. One can also roam the gardens and have a nice picnic or choose to employ the boats for the entire duration of the trip.

Accompanied by their caregivers and the staff of the community, the seniors embarked on a journey back to their childhood days. As they walked through the park, the seniors were content by the beauty of their surroundings. The fun didn’t stop there. The highlight of the day was definitely the toy train ride the residents had across the village which was a first time experience for most of them. The miniature train made its journey from the station situated near KTDC restaurant at Veli and covered a distance of 2.2km during a 20-minute trip and it indeed turned out to be a very fun one.

One very happy episode occurred when a resident with dementia joined us at the suggestion of her son. She hasn’t smiled much since dementia took over her. The carers were shocked and pleased to see her not only grin the entire time, but also giggle joyously as she witnessed small children playing in the park. She has also shown remarkable improvement since the trip, as someone who never spoke or replied much is now smiling back at others and can now count to 10 in her speech therapy sessions. The entire Season Two family is overjoyed to witness such a great change in her since joining us, and this has encouraged many of the members more than ever!
